Over the last few years, I have been working on a very small case of Arachnophobia. It started a few years ago, when I spotted a small black spider with a white, possibly hour glass shaped mark on it near our garbage can area. The spider moved so quickly, I did not get a very good look at it. But it seemed to match the general description of the posionous "black widow" (she mates and she kills!) spider you hear so much about. Then a bit later, i found one of the same spiders, dead this time, on the tarp covering our wood pile. I put the spider i a ziplock, but I never really researched it. I did a few casual google seaches (which ends up showing you as many black widow bites as spiders (think Huge red welt).
Anyway, over the summer I spotted another one of these spiders on our rowboat, thanksfully not while we were out rowing around in it. Again, it moved too quick to get a good look at.
Then, this past weekend, I saw another one, again this time in the kayak. My wife killed this one with her shoe. Then, the same night, right as we we going up to bed, there was one in the house, on the wall next to the front door. I managed to get this spider into a zip lock. (Actaully, it is double zip locked, in case we are dealing with the Houdini of spiders).
Then I get upsairs, and there is another one on the ceiling of the bedroom. I proceeded to bring all sorts of implemets up to the bedroom, including a cup taped to the handle of a poll. I was attempting the second capture of the night, but after the spider escaped from the ziplock for the second time, the wife killed it with a dust pan.
Ok, so a few questions and comments. Is this actaully a black widow? I got a guy who's brother in law is an eytmologist working on that. Do I really have arachnophobia? My feeling is no. I am scared of spiders that can lead to a trip to the emergency room. That sounds pretty rational to me. And if was really that scared, would I get my fingers this close?
