The only thing I recall being similiar to this is an American Flag Illusion in a textbook when I was a kid.
Over the last few weeks, I worked out a design in my head and acquired the necessary parts to build it. After a bit of sawing, dremel tool work, and spray painting, I built a rig that holds the camera securely. The first few photos with this setup have been very flat and washed out. Even though I painted the inside of the pipes black, there still must be light bouncing around inside. I wound up using the old box as a lens shade, which improved things a bit.
This lens has a radius of about 3 inches, and has a minimal amount of depth of field.
